mid 17th century: from Latin integrat- ‘made whole’, from the verb integrare, from integer ‘whole’
Most of us experience ourselves as a collection of parts and/or layers of consciousness. We have a body but also a mind and spirit. When our parts or layers are harmonious, we move through life with ease. When they aren't, even the smallest thing can be a struggle, a trigger, an obstacle.
In my work, I help clients reorganize and integrate the different parts of themselves, the different facets of their lives, their emotions, their thoughts, and their relationship to Self and others.
Empathy is the foundation of counselling. When we are seen and heard, when our feelings are validated, and when we understand that our experience is normal, healing has a chance to happen. As a deep, patient, attentive listener, I'm here to witness your story, reflect it back to you in new ways, and help you explore new possibilities you haven't considered before.
Underneath our thoughts and emotions, our nervous system constantly strives for safety. This can be helpful, but often it means we don't feel like we're in control of our own experience. I help clients decode the subtle messages of the body. When we understand why our brains and bodies work the way they do, we can learn to speak our own inner language with a lot more ease.
Counselling is more than understanding what makes us tick. We'll practice tools that you can use throughout your life. These include breathing, grounding exercises, reframing thoughts, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and many more techniques from a range of modalities. When we grow from the inside out, change is a lot more lasting.
Just like the trees and mycelial network in a forest, the issues below are all connected. No single challenge can be completely separated from the rest. This is why my approach to counselling is integrative, which means that I draw from many influences. We can use the following list as a starting point, a place to figure out a focus, and we can always shift gears as we go along.
To me, stress is this sort of silent plague that affects us on every level, but we don't often realize it. I can help walk you through the steps to recognize your stress, understand it, and gradually get a better handle on it.
I suffered long bouts of depression, and nothing seemed to work. It took the combination of a number of different approaches to get to a point where I stay level for long periods of time, and the drops aren't as long. I've gathered a wide range of tools and approaches I'd love to share with you.
I didn't realize I was dealing with anxiety until I finally had a panic attack. Like stress, it's another silent challenge that can work in the background until it finally crashes our system. I'm here to help guide you through and out of your anxiety, into a life that doesn't feel so on edge.
As a dancer, musician, dance and music teacher, performing artist, and all-around creative type for years and years, I know what it's like to face creative blocks, want to try something new but feel too scared, or suffer from long plateaus. Let's find the spark you need to express yourself!
I feel like I've been practicing relationships ever since I first started dating in high school. I have experience in both monogamous, open, and polyamorous relationships, both long and short term, casual dating and marriage, long distance and living together. I'm here to share the tools I've learned and support you as you navigate your own challenging relationship(s).
As an Adult Child of an Alcoholic (ACOA), codependency is almost like a way of life. It operates in the background, muddying relationships and boundaries, and is often misunderstood. After working through my own codependent challenges, I'm here to help you walk through yours.
As a boy who never fit in with other boys, and a man who doesn't fit the typical male stereotype, I've worked hard to escape the societal concept of what a man is supposed to be, and I've arrived at my own happy, healthy version of life as a man. After working with teen boys for years, and leading a men's group for the past three years, I'd love to walk alongside you on your own journey. Let's figure out how you can be the person you want to be in a culture that leads so many men astray.
As we address any or all of the above, some of the methods and modalities we might draw from include: Attachment Theory, Polyvagal Theory, nervous system science (regulation/dysregulation), somatics-influenced tools, Narrative Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM). I have also supported clients through addiction and recovery, boundaries and consent, apology and making amends, overwhelm, shyness, and more.
